Your Threats Make Us Stronger, IPOB Replied Buharir

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Thursday reacted to President Muhammadu Buhari’s threat of mobilizing security agents against them.

IPOB’s National Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said Buhari’s threat cannot stop the group from actualizing Biafra.

Powerful, in a chat, said the president’s threat would make IPOB and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) stronger.

According to Powerful: “They have been doing that before now, let me tell you threatening cannot change IPOB, he can stay in the Aso Rock threatening Nigerians but not IPOB and ESN.

“We like threats from anybody, it makes us stronger. Fulani terrorists and their leader’s threat can’t remove or change our resolve to restore Biafra freedom from Nigeria.”

Buhari had said his government would organize the military and police to treat IPOB in the language they understand.

Speaking on Arise Television, Buhari said security agents would go after them.

“These people are spread everywhere with businesses and everything. They know what they are talking about, anyways, we said we will treat them in a way they understand.

“We will organise the military and police to pursue them,” he said.

IPOB led by Nnamdi Kanu has been advocating for the actualization of Biafra.

Under Kanu’s leadership, IPOB has grown into a well-established organisation with an armed security outfit known as the ESN.

ESN is saddled with the responsibility of protecting the Southeast from killer Fulani herdsmen.

NBC Issues New Directives To All Social Media Platforms, Online Broadcasters

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has asked all social media platforms and online broadcasting service providers operating in Nigeria to apply for broadcast license.

Armstrong Idachaba, the NBC director-general, gave the directive in a newspaper advertorial published on Thursday.

This follows the federal government’s announcement that Twitter and other social media platforms must register as a Nigerian company for them “to do business in Nigeria.”

It re-echoes concerns raised by allegations that the Buhari administration is clamping down on free speech and internet freedom — the government denies this.

Idachaba said in the advertorial that the NBC establishment code empowers the commission to ask the companies to be licensed.

Section two (b) of the NBC act of 2004 states: “(1) The Commission shall have [the] responsibility of: Receiving, processing and considering applications for the establishment, ownership or operation of radio and television stations including (i) cable television services, direct satellite broadcast and any other medium of broadcasting.”

The advertorial reads: “The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) hereby directs every Online Broadcast Service provider and Social Media Platforms operating within the Nigerian State to apply and obtain broadcast licence for their service(s).

“Note that any Online Broadcast Service Provider that fails to obtain a licence will be considered an illegal entity.”

It is not immediately clear whether the directive applies strictly to only broadcast organisations or not.

Franca Aiyetan, NBC spokesman, declined to speak on the matter when contacted by TheCable on Thursday.

Although no direction has been drawn, the government moved to license social media companies after Twitter took down a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari, after stating that the message violates its policy.

In the tweet, the president had threatened to treat Nigerians “misbehaving” in “the language they understand”.

Two days after the incident, the federal government suspended Twitter in Nigeria and directed NBC to “immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria”.

The NBC also directed broadcast stations to stop using Twitter, saying it “will be unpatriotic for any broadcaster in Nigeria to continue to patronise” the microblogging site.

The action heightens concerns about press freedom which were raised after the commission reviewed its code to, among other things, increase the fine for “hate speech” from N500,000 to N5 million.

A number of media houses have been sanctioned in line with the code which many Nigerians and groups said targets press freedom and critics of the Buhari administration.

President Muhammadu Buhari has described the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as a dot in a circle that has nowhere to go.

Buhari stated this on Thursday, during an interview with Arise TV.

According to the president, people from the South East have too much investment in Nigeria. He also threatened to send the Military and Police after them.

He said, “That IPOB is just like a dot in a circle. Even if they want to exit, they will have no access to anywhere.

“And the way they are spread all over the country, having businesses and property, I don’t think IPOB knows what they are talking about.

“In any case, we say we’ll talk to them in the language that they understand. We’ll organise the police and the military to pursue them.”

Buhari also claimed he has been assured by, “the elderly people” and “the youths” from the South-South region, that they have no intention of seceding.

He insisted that IPOB will not have “access to anywhere” even if they eventually secede from the country.

Just In: Buhari Flags Off Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday officially inaugurated the 157km double track Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge.

The occasion was witnessed by a galaxy of very eminent personalities -they include Ministers of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed, his Youths and Sport Development colleague, Sunday Dare, Minister of State for Transportation Gbemisola Saraki, and Ithe Speaker, House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila.

Others are the Chairman of Governors Forum and Governor of Ekiti State Dr Kayode Fayemi, his colleagues from Lagos, Ogun and Oyo States Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Seyi Makinde and Dapo Abiodun.

Royal fathers led by the representatives of the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Gbadebo were also in attendance.

Also in attendance were top government functionaries and eminent personalities among them Africa’s first Nobel Laureate Prof Woke Soyinka, captains of industries and members of the civil society.

It was Buhari’s first state visit to Lagos is six years and a major major milestone project which linked the nation’s economic capital to Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State and political capital of the Southwest.

Buhari entered the ornately decorated venue, which was the Mobolaji Johnson Railway Station at exactly 10.25am, decked in a blue flowing gown and a blue cap to match.

Addressing Nigerians, Buhari expressed happiness that the project which was greeted with pessimism is being inaugurated in the life time of the administration.

He expressed commitment to the ongoing massive infrastructural development across the country.
