President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a six-month extension of the tenure to the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to remain in office until February 2027 to complete key reforms and oversee a smooth leadership transition.
The Presidency announced the decision in a statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Adeniyi’s current tenure, which was scheduled to expire on August 1, 2026, has been extended to enable him to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window project—a flagship trade facilitation initiative aimed at enhancing efficiency in Nigeria’s import and export processes.
The extension will also allow the Customs chief to work with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to conclude critical personnel matters, including the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the compulsory retirement of officers who have reached the statutory retirement age of 60 years or completed 35 years in service.
The Presidency said the measures are designed to ensure an orderly succession process and sustain ongoing institutional reforms within the Customs Service.
Adeniyi, a seasoned career customs officer, joined the Nigeria Customs Service in the late 1980s after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University. Over the years, he rose steadily through the ranks, becoming Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.
President Tinubu appointed him Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023, entrusting him with driving reforms aimed at boosting revenue generation, strengthening border security, and modernising customs operations.
The latest extension is expected to provide the Customs Service with continuity in implementing strategic reforms while paving the way for a seamless transition to a new leadership at the expiration of Adeniyi’s tenure in February 2027.
