IBADAN - The Nigeria Customs Service, Oyo/Osun Area Command, says it generated N65.66 billion between January and August 2026, recording a 13.88 percent increase over the same period last year.
The Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Wale Moses Adewole, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing at the Command's Operational Headquarters in Ibadan.
According to Adewole, the Command generated N65,661,343,026.94 in the eight-month period, as against N57,656,161,990.24 collected between January and August 2025.
He attributed the performance to sustained commitment to revenue collection, trade facilitation, stakeholder engagement and improved compliance strategies.
On anti-smuggling, Adewole said the Command intensified operations across its jurisdiction in August and recorded major seizures with a total Duty Paid Value of N4,106,951,689.00.
The seized items include:
2,012 bags of foreign parboiled rice (50kg), 550 bags of foreign parboiled rice (25kg), 2,440 wraps of Cannabis Sativa, 1,150 pieces of used tyres, 101 pieces of used compressors, 48 packs of Tramadol 225mg, 105 bales and 28 sacks of used clothing, 18 sacks of used shoes, 450 kegs of PMS (25 litres each), 33 bottles of foreign vegetable oil (3 litres each), 30 bags of foreign sugar (60kg each), 17 units of used vehicles, 10 means of conveyance, and 10 containers of Corrosive 8 Mercury.
Other seizures are 573 pieces of Nigeria Police Force crest, 92 yards of Police camouflage uniform fabric, one pistol, one jack knife, six pistol magazines, one pump-action magazine and 60 detonating cords.
Adewole expressed concern over the interception of Police crests and camouflage fabrics, warning that such items could be used by criminal elements to impersonate law enforcement officers and perpetrate crimes amid prevailing security challenges.
He also raised alarm over the interception of Corrosive 8 Mercury, describing it as a hazardous chemical capable of causing fire, explosion, injury, property damage and loss of lives if improperly handled.
"The interception therefore helped to prevent potentially hazardous materials from entering circulation and being handled by unauthorised persons," he said.
The Controller said the seizures demonstrate the vigilance and professionalism of officers of the Command, driven by intelligence and collaboration with sister security agencies.
He reaffirmed the Command's commitment to improving revenue generation, facilitating legitimate trade and sustaining the fight against smuggling and economic sabotage, in line with the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, while ensuring legitimate businesses are not unduly impeded.
He commended the media for their partnership and responsible reportage of Customs activities.
