The Lagos Chapter of the Photojournalists Association of Nigeria (PJAN) has elected a new set of executives to pilot the association’s affairs for the next three years.
The election, which took place on Thursday, August 6, 2026, was held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos Council Secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja, bringing together members of the association to elect leaders who will represent their interests and oversee the chapter’s activities.
At the end of the electoral process, Mr Bolaji Olasunkanmi of The Daily Monitor was declared the new Chairman of PJAN Lagos, while Mr Paul Timothy, a freelance photojournalist, emerged as Vice Chairman.
Both Olasunkanmi and Timothy were returned unopposed.
The results were announced by the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mr Bamidele Lamidi, who formally declared the successful candidates after the election.
New PJAN Lagos Executive
Other members elected to serve alongside the new chairman include Mr Kazeem Bakenne, who was returned as Secretary, while Mr Mreke Ajebo was elected Assistant Secretary.
Mr Kola Aliu emerged as Treasurer, with Mr Michael Otogo elected Financial Secretary. Mr Abiodun Omotoso was also elected to serve as Internal Auditor.
The new executive is expected to provide leadership for the Lagos chapter over the next three years, with members looking to the team to address issues affecting photojournalists and strengthen the association’s position within the wider journalism community.
Chairman-elect pledges commitment to members
In his acceptance speech, Olasunkanmi thanked members for the confidence reposed in him and pledged that his administration would prioritise the welfare of photojournalists.
He identified member welfare, accountability and strategic partnerships as key areas of focus for his administration.
The Chairman-elect also promised to work towards an administration that would engage with members and relevant stakeholders in strengthening the association and advancing the interests of photojournalists.
His emergence comes at a time when professional photojournalism continues to play an important role in documenting major political, social, economic and cultural events across Lagos and Nigeria.
Photojournalists remain an important part of the country’s media landscape, providing the images that accompany news reports and preserving visual records of significant events for future generations.
NUJ leadership witnesses election
The election was witnessed by the Chairman of the NUJ Lagos Council, Mr Adeleye Ajayii, alongside other dignitaries and members of the association.
The presence of the NUJ leadership further highlighted the relationship between PJAN and the wider journalism community in Lagos.
With the election concluded, attention now shifts to the new leadership and its plans for the chapter over the next three years.
Members will expect the new executives to translate their promises into practical initiatives that improve professional development, welfare, collaboration and opportunities for photojournalists across Lagos.
The successful conduct of the election also marks a new chapter for PJAN Lagos as the association prepares to work under its newly elected leadership.
