…Says Digital Journalism Has Become Indispensable to Nigeria’s Information Ecosystem
ABUJA – The National President of the Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG), Comrade Akpovoke Otiti, has called on government institutions, corporate organisations and other stakeholders to accord online media practitioners greater recognition, describing digital journalism as a vital pillar of Nigeria’s evolving media landscape.
Otiti made the appeal while speaking on the growing influence of online media in news dissemination and public communication, noting that digital platforms have transformed the speed and accessibility of information across the country.
According to him, many government agencies and corporate organisations have expressed concerns that reports covered by some conventional media organisations are not always published despite invitations extended for media coverage.
He explained that while stories filed by reporters in traditional media outlets often undergo lengthy editorial processes before publication, reports published by credible online media organisations are generally made available to the public in real time, providing timely visibility for events and public engagements.
“In many instances, organisations invest resources to facilitate media coverage but later discover that the stories never make it to publication. This can be frustrating, particularly when the objective is to communicate important information to the public,” he said.
Otiti noted that online media organisations are committed to ensuring prompt publication of verified reports, enabling government institutions, businesses and other organisations to effectively reach their target audiences.
“Online media editors and publishers are committed to ensuring that reports from events they cover are published promptly, thereby giving organisations the visibility they seek while keeping the public adequately informed,” he stated.
He described online journalism as an indispensable component of modern information dissemination, providing millions of Nigerians with instant access to verified news and public information across multiple digital platforms.
The GOMEP-NG President therefore urged government institutions, corporate bodies and private organisations to strengthen collaboration with credible online media organisations as strategic partners in promoting transparency, public awareness and effective communication.
He reaffirmed the Guild’s commitment to professionalism, ethical journalism and responsible reporting, stressing that members of GOMEP-NG remain dedicated to the principles of accuracy, fairness, balance and the timely dissemination of verified information.
Otiti also appealed to Nigerians to continue supporting the growth of credible online journalism, noting that digital media has become an integral part of the country’s democratic process and information ecosystem.
According to him, as news consumption continues to shift towards digital platforms, recognising and engaging professional online media practitioners will enhance public communication and ensure that accurate information reaches citizens promptly.
