The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, has announced the successful rescue of five abducted students of Gateway Polytechnic, Sapade, following a coordinated and intelligence-led operation by security operatives.
Addressing journalists at the Ogun State Police Command Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, CP Ojajuni said the incident occurred on April 27, 2026, at about 10:55 p.m., when the Ipara Division received a distress call reporting a suspected kidnapping in the Sapade area.
According to him, a patrol team was immediately dispatched to the scene, where an ash-coloured Toyota vehicle was found abandoned. The vehicle bore visible bullet impacts and blood stains, while mobile phones and other personal belongings were recovered at the scene.
Further investigation led to the discovery of an identity card belonging to a student of Gateway Polytechnic, Sapade, confirming that the occupants of the vehicle were students. This discovery prompted the immediate escalation of the case and the activation of a full-scale rescue operation.
Acting swiftly on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, multiple tactical units were mobilised, including operatives from the Isara Area Command, Ipara Division, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), Quick Response Squad (QRS), and OP MESA.
CP Ojajuni disclosed that on April 28, 2026, at about 3:00 p.m., the joint security teams commenced intensive bush-combing and intelligence-driven tracking operations along suspected escape routes. These routes included the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Fidiwo axis in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area.
He explained that the sustained pressure mounted by the operatives forced the kidnappers into a confrontation. During the operation, the suspects engaged the police in a gun duel but were overwhelmed by superior firepower, forcing them to flee with suspected gunshot injuries. He noted that no casualty was recorded among police operatives.
The Commissioner confirmed that the five victims were successfully rescued during the operation. They were immediately evacuated, debriefed, and given first aid before being taken to the Police Hospital in Abeokuta for medical attention. He assured that the rescued students are in stable condition.
Commending the gallantry, professionalism, and swift coordination of all the tactical units involved, CP Ojajuni said the success of the operation was largely due to the intelligence-driven approach adopted by the Command.
He further assured the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects, adding that bush-combing operations continue in the area to ensure their arrest and prosecution. The rescued students were subsequently handed over to the management of Gateway Polytechnic, Sapade.
