The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) extends its heartfelt condolences to the Onabanjo family on the passing of Chief Mrs Lucia Onabanjo, matriarch of the revered Onabanjo dynasty.
Her transition marks the end of a remarkable era, not only for her family but for Ogun State and all who were touched by her life of dignity, strength and quiet service.
Chief Mrs Onabanjo stood firmly beside her husband, the late Chief Bisi Onabanjo, whose contributions to journalism and public life remain indelible. As a seasoned journalist, Chief Bisi Onabanjo distinguished himself through courage, integrity and an unwavering commitment to truth, values that defined his career in the media before his foray into governance. His work helped shape public discourse and set standards that continue to guide the journalism profession in Nigeria.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Chief Bisi Onabanjo was a mentor and source of inspiration to many journalists, particularly in Ogun State, where his legacy as a media icon and statesman is deeply cherished. His belief in a free, responsible and people-centred press remains a reference point for practitioners who see journalism as a tool for societal development.
The Ogun NUJ acknowledges and appreciates the Onabanjo family for preserving and upholding the ideals and legacy of their patriarch over the years.
We recognise the family’s continued support for the journalism community and the values of service, excellence and integrity which Chief Bisi Onabanjo exemplified throughout his lifetime.
As journalists across Ogun State mourn with the family, we pray that Almighty God grants them the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss and comforts them in this moment of grief.
May the soul of Chief Mrs Lucia Onabanjo rest in perfect peace, and may the enduring legacies of the Onabanjo family continue to inspire generations to come.
E - Signed
