Fubara Joins APC, Accuses PDP of Abandoning Him During Rivers Political Crisis

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has disclosed that his decision to abandon the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) stemmed from the party’s failure to protect him during the intense political turmoil that recently rocked the state.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House, Port Harcourt, on Tuesday, Fubara said he turned to the federal government for support after facing political threats that jeopardised both his position and his survival as governor.

Explaining the circumstances that led to his move, Fubara said, “I went to see Mr President not just for a personal visit, but for a consultation on state matters. The most important outcome of that meeting is that we now have full support to leave where we were because we didn’t get the protection we needed.”

During the meeting, the governor officially announced his defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), taking with him a significant bloc of his loyal supporters.

He noted that the APC offered the backing and stability he needed amid the ongoing political tensions in the state.

Fubara added, “If President Tinubu had not intervened, there wouldn’t be a Siminalayi Fubara today. We have the people and supporters with us. Our decision is to move to the APC and fully support the President’s second-term bid.”

The governor’s defection marks one of the most consequential political shifts in Rivers State in recent years and is expected to significantly reshape the state’s political landscape as the country heads toward the 2027 general elections.
