LAGOS – With the opposition leaders’ re­cent resolve to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the platform for the emerging co­alition, analysts have expressed doubt if the new bride political platform and the remnants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) can rout President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his ruling All Pro­gressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

Barrister Olalekan F. Ojo, one of the analysts and an advocate of social justice, who spoke to Sunday Independent at the week­end, said the opposition’s current capacity to oust President Tinu­bu in 2027 appears weak and frag­mented.

Ojo, a Lagos-based human rights lawyer and the Managing Partner, Platinum & Taylor Hill LP, a leading law firm in Nige­ria, stated: “The internal schism within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — now splintered into the ‘new ADC’ and the ‘re­sidual PDP’ — signals deep ideo­logical and strategic disunity.

“Such division undermines coalition-building, voter confi­dence, and the clarity of alterna­tive governance visions.

“Without a cohesive platform, shared leadership, and a credible candidate that can galvanise na­tional appeal across regional, ethnic, and generational lines, the opposition will struggle to mount any serious challenge to an incumbent president with the advantage of state power and a relatively consolidated APC.

“That said, Nigeria’s political landscape is dynamic. The oppo­sition can still recalibrate, if it prioritises unity over ego, mes­sage over money, and grassroots over elite politics.

“Nigerians are yearning for purposeful leadership, and if the opposition can offer that with sin­cerity and structure, 2027 could still hold surprises.

“But, as things stand today, the path to unseating President Tinu­bu remains steep and uncertain.”

Barrister Emeka Iheonu, an­other Lagos-based lawyer, stated: “So long as President Tinubu has the constitutional right to go for a second term, he will get it, except an act of God occurs.

“No amount of coalition can oust him so long as he is deter­mined to conclude his second term.

“He still has the capacity to rule for another four years de­spite the worsening economy.”

Baba Aye, a veteran activist and Co-Convener, Coalition for Revolution (CORE), in his re­sponse, stated: “The situation is more complex than merely see­ing the opposition as being split between PDP and ADC. This is a split of the intra-class opposition.

“Be they APC, PDP or ADC, they all represent the same class of looters, exploiters, oppressors.

“Even when you look at the individuals, you see that most of them have gone the rounds.

“Amaechi was a PDP gover­nor and served as APC minister. El-Rufai was APC governor after serving as PDP minister.

“Atiku ran for president on PDP and ACN platforms and in the primaries of APC. We must not allow them to pull wool over our eyes.”
