A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and ally of former vice president Atiku Abubakar, Segun Sowunmi, has said he would not hesitate to leave the opposition party if he chose to support President Bola Tinubu.
Sowunmi
made the statement during an interview on Channels Television on Monday
night, in reaction to questions surrounding his recent meeting with
Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
“I will leave the PDP if I want to work for Tinubu,” Sowunmi said. “I am not a political captive.”
His
comments come amid growing tensions within the PDP, as former
presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar intensifies efforts to lead an
opposition coalition against Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
Sowunmi, however, played down any allegiance to Atiku’s current political mobilisation, stating flatly: “Is he running for president now? He is running a coalition that everybody knows I am not part of.
