Japa: Moving Abroad, Broke,Turning A Driver Made Me Appreciate Nigeria – Femi Brainard

One of Nollywood’s finest actor, Femi Brainard, has opened up on why he has been missing on the screens for years and his relocation abroad years ago.

Brainard was a guest on Teju Oyelakin poscast aka Teju Babyface’s and he shared his life’s lessons.

It is better to be celebrated and be a prince in Nigeria than to move abroad and be a nobody, Brainard said.

“America does not recognize your stardom, nor does it respect your celebrity.”

Upon relocation to the United States, the thespian said he was a driver and his wife, who he celebrated his 10th wedding anniversary in May 2023, does not love the idea at all.

Narrating his story, he shared that anytime he is driving, his Nigerian passengers in particular can’t help but stare at him in disbelief and wonder if he is the star they know.

The curious ones would approach him to be sure he was the famous actor they knew in Nigeria and he would have to tell them he’s driving and need to be concentrated.

Recalling one of his humbling experiences, Brainard said he was broke and had to get into the car pack and cried because the bills are a lot and he has things like rent to also pay for.

Brainard was full of praise and admiration for Teju saying that he respect his host a lot because right in the front of the public and on camera, he prostrated when he received Pa Sunny Ade, one of Nigeria’s foremost musicians and legendary juju singer.

The actor noted that the singular act taught him a whole lot and he has had to also do same to older ones he comes across. He was also appreciative of the upbringing of the comedian and requested that he put out a word to his parents out of respect for this.
