The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) authority has again remind the drivers and other road users that safety on our roads is expected to be their watchword as the yuletide season’s rushing hours about to commenced.
The agency’s TCC/CEO, Cdr Abdulfatai Olaseni Ogunyemi disclosed this while welcoming Nigerians to the month of November with the message tagged: “Stay safe, drive safely and be protected.”
He said ember months has usually characterized with heavy influx of both human and vehicular during the yuletide season without prioritized the road safety rules and regulations. Noting that every road users – being motorists, okada riders, trycyclists nor pedestrians are expected to always buckle up for safety while on the road.
He emphasized that seatbelts are an essential part of safe driving. No driver should be on the wheel without fasten seatbelt and also ensure everyone in the vehicle is fasten theirs.
According to Cdr Ogunyemi, drive with minimum speed is not just the law but for safety of the drivers, its passengers and other road users, saying higher speeds make it more difficult to control vehicle when the need to avoid accident occourred. “Speed limits are designed to help keep you safe on the road,” he added.
The traffic management expert discouraged motorists from engaging themselves in all forms of distractions while on the wheel to prevent unwanted disaster. He added that distracted or inattentive drivers are part of the leading causes of accidents, urging drivers to remain focused on the road at all times so that they can react and avoid potential accidents.
He stressed the need for the drivers to eschew the idea of drunk driving, overloading, excess speed and mostly night traveling. “Don’t rely on other drivers to drive perfectly. Adopt defensive driving culture. Be considerate of other drivers, but always be mindful of them. Don’t assume that they can see you or will move out of the way to allow you to turn or change lanes. If you assume that other drivers will make mistakes, you will be more prepared to act when they do.”
He admonished okada riders, trycyclists and commercial vehicle drivers to always consider the necessity of traffic rules while on the road, adding that it is road traffic indiscipline to create hazard parking through picking or dropping passengers, texting or calling on the wheels, riding motorcycle without wearing helmet.
“Keep your vehicle well-maintained. Preventative maintenance can keep your vehicle operating safely. Check your tyre pressures as well as the tread on your tyres. Make sure your vehicle’s fluids are filled and your battery is working.”
Cdr Ogunyemi said he has mandated the agency’s operatives to double-up their effectiveness, enforcement and as well collaborate with other sister agencies to ensure the road is more safer for the users during the yuletide season and beyond.
