Ikeja Unit Command of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), yesterday, November 15, 2023 flagged off its ember months public enlightenment campaign at one of the popular motor park in Iyana-Ipaja, a suburb of Lagos State with the theme: “Speed thrills but kills, drive responsibly and avoid overloading.”
The annual FRSC programme was designed to remind road users the importance of obeying traffic rules and regulations to stem unwanted road mishaps whenever the year is rolling to the end.
Speaking at the event, Acting RS2 Zone Commander, DCC Patrick Davou, said most of the recorded road traffic crashes were caused by human factor, ranging from overspeeding, overloading, wrongful overtaking, drunk driving, distractions, fatigue and other Indiscipline while on the steering
He urged the transport union and market leaders to checkmate the sale of alcoholic drinks at various motor parks to reduce the rate its consumption by drivers, saying most of the road crashes, apart from overspeeding and overloading were occured as a result of alcoholic inducement on the side of drivers.
DCC Davou advised Motorists to always ensure they obey all traffic rules and regulations while on the road, urging them to ensure their vehicle is fully road worthiness before embarking on a journey, eat little to avoid fatigue, embark on defensive driving, maintain minimum speed limit and always have it in mind that their family and passengers families are at home waiting for their arrivals whenever they are on steering.
Other causes of road traffic crashes he listed include dangerous/recklessness, driving under the influence of alcoholic, use of worn-out tyres, aggressiveness and driving unbalanced mechanical vehicles on the road.
He, said FRSC will never seize from partnering with other sister agencies during the yuletide season and beyond to reduce road mishaps while seeking the stakeholders cooperation in curbing the menaces causing the ugly incidents on the road, saying safety on the road is a collective responsibility.
In his address, Ikeja Unit Commander, Chief Route Commander Sunday Olaniran, said the purpose of the event was to remind the motorists and other road users the importance of obeying traffic rules.
He discouraged drivers from embarking on night trips, violating speed limits, committing lane indiscipline and disregarding other traffic rules and regulations, noting that these violations often heightened the spate and fatalities of road traffic crashes within the festive seasons.
He said Ikeja Command had concluded plan to deploy personnel with operational gadgets for traffic control, public education, point-off-load enlightenment and surveillance strategic advocacy, urging all drivers to ensure they have valid driver’s license before driving on the road. “Together we shall make our road accident free during the yuletide season and beyond,” CRC Olaniran, added
The event featured free medical check-up, distribution of safety fliers and in attendance were representative of Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), NDLEA, Police, NSCDC, Fire Fighters and transport union leaderships
