A former governor of Cross River State, Senator Liyel Imoke has said that the Rt Hon. Daniel Asuquo, popularly known as Dansuki, will do well as governor if the people of the state give him their support to climb to the exalted office.
Imoke said this on Sunday when Asuquo visited him to mark the beginning of his consultations, to declare his intention to contest the 2023 governorship election in the state. Imoke described Asuquo as his son, saying the former chairman of Akamkpa Local Government was visionary and competent.
Sunday’s visit to Imoke was the first in a series of such consultative visits being planned by the member of House of Representatives for Akpamkpa/Biase Federal Constituency, ahead of the 2023 election.
According to the former governor, Asuquo possessed the credentials to govern Cross River and return the state to the path of greatness.
He however said since there were many other aspirants for the top job, it was necessary for all the contenders to show maturity in their effort to mobilise support ahead of the primary election of the PDP, to avoid crisis.
Imoke recalled events that rocked the state at the time that Donald Duke was governor and was prevented from getting into Akpamkpa by Asuquo’s supporters, saying he decided to draw Asuquo closer because a man that could be so daring against a sitting governor certainly had some guts that could be useful to the state.
He said Asuquo did not disappoint when he decided to appoint him into sensitive positions of authority in the state.
While making known his intention to contest the 2023 governorship election to the former governor, Asuquo extolled Imoke for believing in him at a time that some leaders in the state saw him in a different light.
He said he was willing and ready to redeem the image of the state and return it to the path of glory, noting that under Imoke, Cross River was a state to be proud of and that he would continue from where the former governor stopped and added that he needed his blessings to move on.
Asuquo also spoke on his plans for the state.
He said he would work towards improving the internally generated revenue profile of the state, embark on the development of rural communities and run a people-oriented and consultative government, the same way Imoke did when he was on the saddle.
