The Senator representing Lagos West District in the National Assembly, Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, has promised to ensure that the dividends of democracy trickle down to the grassroots even as he vowed to continue to protect the interest of his constituents as their representative.
Speaking at an empowerment programme held in Ikeja, where various items were distributed to over 3,500 constituents, who have been trained in various skills, Adeola stated that beneficiaries were chosen indiscriminately from the constituency.
The senator, who thanked the constituents for sending him to Abuja to represent them, said it was not enough to tar roads and provide social amenities for the people. According to him, “Earlier in the year, we had a similar programme at the Nigeria Police College Ground in Ikeja. Yes, it is a commitment to the promise made to you, and we shall continue to keep faith in our words. Without doubts, there are better days ahead.
“In these series of today, 3,500 constituents are benefitting across all LGAs/LCDAs of Lagos West senatorial district.
“These include the 700 constituents/participants who have successfully completed a 10-day skills acquisition training as well as others who underwent a five-day entrepreneurship training. “The participants were paid transport allowance during the training, and at the end of their training last month, they are now to be given equipment and cash to practice and earn income for the various skills they had acquired.”
Adola added that all local government areas in Lagos West were beneficiaries of the training programme, which he said focused on different vocations after a need assessment selection process.
He said the successfully trained constituents acquired skills in makeup artistry, phone repairs, paint making, hairdressing, barbing, confectionery and fashion design, and that they will get their equipment and start-up grants today (yesterday), while some other beneficiaries will receive grants to grow their businesses also.
“Let me also state that earlier, precisely a week today, hundreds of farmers were empowered with improved varieties of seedlings made up of plantain suckers, maize, melon, pumpkin seed and cassava stems.
“We had also facilitated the training of hundreds of constituents in fish production, and the participants had been empowered with fingerlings, fish feeds, fish tanks and cash grants to run their fish business,” he stated.
While declaring support for the presidential ambition of former Lagos Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Adeola said the All Progressives Congress (APC) has good plans for the people.
Speaking at the event, which was attended by several leaders of the APC in the area, the South West Director-General of the Small Medium Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDA), Mr Kayode Esho, appreciated the efforts of the lawmaker.
Esho, however, urged the beneficiaries of the items to make good use of the opportunity.
