Obumneme, son of the murdered Chike Akunyili has narrated how his father was killed alongside two other persons by some unknown gunmen.

Chike was the husband of the late Dora Akunyili, ex-Minister of Information and Communications and former Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). 

He was shot dead on Tuesday by unknown gunmen, alongside his police escort and one Aloysius, identified as his driver. 

The Police Command in Anambra State, where the incident happened, has vowed to find the killers. 

Speaking with the BBC Igbo, Obumneme said his dad was shot in the face by gunmen who opened fire on his vehicle at Nkpor, Anambra State.

“His driver and a police officer assigned to him also died in the shooting. A cousin survived and is being treated in hospital,” Obumneme added.

They were driving back from the town of Nsukka in Enugu state after attending a lecture hosted by the University of Nigeria to pay tribute to the late NAFDAC DG, Dora.

Meanwhile, the Agulu community in the Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State has declared three-day mourning and suspended all political activities during the period for the late Chike Akunyili. 

Also, Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state has placed a bounty of N20 million on the heads of the killers.
