It took a combined efforts of
security personnel, on Thursday to repelled an attempt by inmates of the
Ikoyi Correctional Centre in Lagos to break away and escape from the
prison.
The Assistant Comptroller General, ACG,
Tosin Akinrinjuwon confirmed this while giving on the spots assessment
on an AIT Television program.
According
to ACG Tosin, there was early morning attack on the Correctional Centre
when inmates made frantic efforts to set it ablaze, break jail and
escape.
"They had already broken into and burnt some places such as the Records Office, Admn Office, etc.
"They
even burrowed the land and started attacking our staff within the
perimetre of the wall. But we got the information early enough and came
here with military personnel including anti-riot police, NSCDC to stop
them.
"So far, I can tell you authoritatively that the attempted jail break in Ikoyi has been voided and no one prisoner escaped.
Earlier,
there were various reports that Ikoyi Correctional Center was under
fire, but it was not clear from reports, whether the fire was caused by
jail break or the center was under attack.
The
video of the inmates running helter skelter within the premises was just
shown on Arise Television. The picture was reportedly sent to the
television station by residents of Ribadu road, and Norman Williams
Street, the roads which lead to the center.
